Roann is fortunate enough to have not one, but THREE Historic Landmarks in its midst; The Stockdale Mill, The Roann Covered Bridge, and The Roann Paw Paw Twp. Public Library. It is truly a special little town. Come and see for yourself.
Thomas Goudy built the original grist mill in 1839, and when it was washed away, the current Stockdale Mill was constructed. Construction for the mill took place during 1855-1857. In 1860, there was seventeen grain mills in Wabash County. The Stockdale Mill produced flour until 1964, much longer than its competitors, and today it is the only mill surviving in the county. After years of deterioration, the landmark was purchased in 2001, and restoration was undertaken by the Stockdale Mill Foundation. The mill is open for tours during the summer months. For more information, contact the Stockdale Mill Foundation. (photo from a past Roann Community calendar)
The Roann Covered Bridge is one of only two remaining covered bridges in Wabash County, where once there were twenty-nine. The bridge is a Howe truss, a common type in Indiana. It was built in 1877 by the Smith Bridge Company of Toledo, Ohio, where it was constructed, disassembled, and transported to its site in Roann. This was a common practice at that tme. The bridge was part of the historic transportation corridor between Wabash and Rochester. On September 28, 1990 the bridge was largely destroyed by fire. The community raised over $300,000 to reconstruct the bridge, and it was rededicated in Julyy 1992. (photo by Mark's Camera and Shutterbug Studio)
